790-11 Protected Membrane Roof Assembly

Protected membrane roofing assemblies, also referred to as inverted roofs, upside down roofs or insulated roofing membrane assemblies (IRMA), have been commonly used in commercial applications since the 1960's. Their success, in conjunction with Bakor's 790-11 Rubberized Asphalt Membrane, have proven the test of time.

Working our way towards the exterior of the building, a protected membrane roof assembly consists of the roof deck, the waterproofing membrane, moisture-resistant rigid insulation, a ballast reduction fabric and then ballast. The membrane is essentially protected from the exterior environment by the rigid insulation and ballast.

Protected membrane roofing assemblies offer the following advantages over conventional type roofing assemblies:

• The membrane is protected from the harsh elements of the environment such as UV and other pollutants
  
• The membrane is not subjected to high temperature variations or cycles
  
• The membrane is protected from damages caused by workers or other trades walking on the roof
  
• The membrane is fully bonded to the building deck therefore minimizing damages by lateral water migration
  
• The membrane acts both as an air/vapour barrier and the waterproofing membrane

This translates to a roofing system that is more economical to install and lasts longer then conventional assemblies.
